MEMS – an alternative to quartz crystal oscillators

Jauch MEMS (Micro-electro-mechanical systems) oscillators offer an attractive combination of low power consumption, small size, high performance and extremely high reliability, shock and vibration resistance that make them ideal for numerous applications, especially in portable and wearable electronics.

MEMS oscillator combines silicon MEMS resonator chip with a programmable oscillator’s chip. Both silicon chips are mounted together and packaged in standard QFN (Quad Flat No-Leads) or CSP (Chip Scale Package).

The output frequency is configured through the use of a fractional-n phase-locked loop (PLL). OTP (One Time Programmable) on-chip memory is used to store the configuration parameters. This architecture allows to easily program output frequency in the range from 1 to 110MHz and 115 to 137MHz but 32,768 kHz version for RTC is also available.

Silicon resonator itself doesn’t have sufficient frequency stability over the temperature for common use cases but precise temperature compensation in oscillator circuitry allows to achieve excellent frequency stability over the temperature. For example, Jauch JSO15 TR, an ultra-low power 32,768 kHz MEMS oscillator offers frequency stability down to +/-5ppm in a temperature range of -40°C ~ +85°C.

Jauch can offer short delivery time because MEMS oscillators are configured according to user requirements in their technology center in Germany. A fully automated process can produce quantities up to 5 000 - 10 000 within a few days. Samples can be shipped within 48 hours.

A crystal oscillator uses a quartz crystal in fundamental mode and a simple oscillator circuit. For each frequency, new quartz crystal has to be manufactured, which is a time consuming task. Crystal oscillators don’t require temperature compensation. Their frequency stability over the temperature is sufficient for common use cases. Temperature compensated oscillators can achieve the same stability as MEMS oscillators.

A key disadvantage of crystal oscillators is crystal susceptibility to vibrations and loss of stability with age. Vibration appears in the jitter performance of quartz devices. Silicon MEMS devices however, are not sensitive to vibrations. MEMS devices resonate at a fundamental frequency in a mode that incident vibration does not modulate. MEMS oscillators provide up to 500 million MTBF hours, shock resistance 50000 g, vibration resistance 70 g. Crystal oscillator can offer 14-38 million MTBF hours, 5000 g shock, 10 g vibration resistance.

Crystal oscillators used to be better in phase noise and phase jitter, power consumption, startup time and frequency stability but as technology evolves, MEMS oscillators are getting very close to crystal ones.

Feel free to ask for samples. Although we typically don’t keep MEMS oscillators in our stock, we can offer samples within a few days. For further information about Jauch products, please contact us at sales@soselectronic.com or visit Jauch web pages.

Main advantages:

  • Extremely high reliability, shock and vibration resistance: 500 million hours MTBF, 50 000 g shock resistance, 70 g vibration resistance
  • Fast delivery service for small quantities
  • Customized and configurable
  • Wide operating temperature range: -55°C ~ +125°C
  • Tight frequency stability over the operating temperature range: +/- 20 ppm, +/-5 ppm for 32,768kHz version
  • 100% drop-in replacement for industry standard 2016 - 7050 QFN packages (Quad Flat No-Leads)
  • MEMS oscillators use a silicon resonator instead of a silicon dioxide resonator which is used in quartz crystal oscillators.
  • Production process takes place in semiconductor factories. This ensures constant high quality of the components.
  • MEMS components are used in a variety of applications for many years.
