Ribbon cable as such appeared in 1956 and gradually, as new technologies evolved, we came to its miniaturized form known as FFC cable. The cable usually consists of a flat and flexible plastic film base, with multiple metallic conductors bonded to one surface. Often, each end of the cable is reinforced with a stiffener to make the insertion easier or to provide strain relief. Sometimes the term FPC (flexible printed circuit) is used for any type of FFC. The most common pitches are 0,5mm and 1mm and there are 2 types of cable:
1. Type A or 1: the exposed contacts are on the same side at each end of the cable
2. Type D or 2: the exposed contacts are on the opposite sides of the cable
When choosing connectors, you should consider:
- Pitch
- SMT or through hole
- Orientation – horizontal or vertical
- Horizontal version – upper contacts, lower contacts or from both sides
- ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) or Non-ZIF (or LIF (Low Insertion Force))
(ZIF connectors have lock –before inserting the cable, lock is released and after insertion, it is closed. Thanks to this the insertion is easy and smooth and prevents cable from being loose. )
