The engineering behind extended temperature SSDs

These drives utilise an industrial SSD controller with a standard 0 to 70 °C operating range, paired with FLASH chips packaged by Apacer themselves. These chips are sourced from original wafers produced by Kioxia or WD.

Apacer refers to these units as Commercial Extended Temperature (CET) SSDs. While the word "commercial" might sound a bit light-duty, don't let it fool you. The ST250 series drives are, for all intents and purposes, industrial-grade. The "commercial" label simply refers to the native temperature rating of the underlying components. Crucially, every single CET SSD undergoes rigorous additional testing to certify its performance across the full –25 to +85 °C range.

Apacer SATA interface SSDs

Models such as the ST250-25, ST250-300, PT250-M242, and PT250-M280 offer the same robust feature set as their SV250 counterparts, with a few strategic omissions to keep costs down: over-provisioning, DataRaid, and optional Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Opal 2.0 support. Additionally, the ST250-25 and ST250-300 utilise thermal throttling.

Over-provisioning

An SSD equipped with over-provisioning sets aside a dedicated portion of its capacity for "garbage collection" algorithms. By reserving this space, the controller can manage NAND flash pages more effectively, sorting through invalid data and clearing blocks far more efficiently than standard drives. This becomes a critical advantage when the disk is reaching capacity or facing intense mixed workloads. Essentially, over-provisioning extends the drive's lifespan and maintains high sustained write speeds.

DataRAID

Think of DataRAID as a safety net for your data. While the SSD controller already uses a hardware error correction scheme based on Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) to fix minor glitches, DataRAID algorithm adds an extra layer of protection. It reserves a small amount of space to store backup parity information. If a file ever gets corrupted, the system uses this backup to rebuild and recover the original data instantly, ensuring your system stays up and running without data loss.

Thermal throttling

The firmware employs a multi-level cooling strategy by gradually stepping down performance (speed) based on the drive's internal temperature. This mechanism prevents overheating by reducing throughput once specific thermal thresholds are hit. As a result, you might see lower speeds when the SSD surface reaches 85 °C compared to the more premium SV250-25 and SV250-300 series.

For higher-speed requirements, the PT250-M242 and PT250-M280 models provide the same functionality as the PV250 series, though without the over-provisioning feature.

Additional features of Apacer CET SSDs

Reliability remains a constant across the range. The ST/SV250 and PT/PV250 series carry the same 3-year warranty, or until the Apacer S.M.A.R.T. software indicates the SSD has exceeded 3 000 erase cycles. The MTBF is also identical at a solid 3 000 000 hours.

Real-world performance of Apacer SSDs

When we compare the speed, endurance, and power consumption of these Apacer SSDs, there isn’t a single "winner" for every scenario. Interestingly, the ST and PT series actually show better write endurance in some metrics, despite lacking dedicated over-provisioning.
