4D SYSTEMS HDMI displays – versatility meets performance
The HDMI interface has firmly established itself not just in the consumer world, but also within demanding industrial sectors. As a seasoned and well-regarded manufacturer of intelligent displays, 4D SYSTEMS is hitting the market with their user-friendly 4DHDMI series TFT modules.
"Specifically, the 4DHDMI range is a high-quality hardware play for anyone who wants the flexibility of standard HDMI video without the usual overhead," notes Martin Brestovič, Product Manager at SOS electronic. "When you combine that industrial-grade durability with the variety of form factors they offer, it becomes a very straightforward choice for integration with single-board computers or embedded systems."
Core technical features of 4D SYSTEMS HDMI displays
- Standard HDMI interface: They feature a standard HDMI input for video and audio signals, making them compatible with any HDMI-capable device, including industrial PLCs and Raspberry Pi.
- Power and data via USB: Most models use a single USB connection (Type-C or Micro-USB) to power the module and send touch data back to the host.
- Capacitive touch panel: These are recognised as standard HID (Human Interface Device) mouse/digitiser devices, so you won't need to hunt for special drivers.
- Superior image quality: The modules use high-quality TFT LCD panels, with many models featuring IPS (In-Plane Switching) technology for wide viewing angles and vivid colour reproduction. The range includes "Super Bright" options that reach up to 1000 cd/m².
- Integrated audio: Many models come equipped with a 3,5 mm stereo jack, allowing you to easily extract audio from the HDMI signal for external speakers or headphones.
A variety of types, sizes, and shapes
One of the standout features of the 4DHDMI series is the sheer diversity of display types (AMOLED, TFT), sizes, and shapes available. Specifically, a major advantage is the availability of round displays, which are quite a rare find in the HDMI market.
- Standard rectangular displays
- Compact types: 4,3", 5,0", and 7,0" (resolutions from 480x272 to 1024x600)
- Mid-to-large types: 8,0", 9,0", 10,1", 12,1", and 15,6" (resolutions up to 1920x1200 / Full HD+)
- Unique round displays
- Sizes: 3,4" and 4,0"
- Resolution: 800 x 800 pixels, providing high pixel density and pin-sharp detail
Integration and mounting for the 4DHDMI series
For engineers and product designers, the 4DHDMI series displays offer several mechanical configurations to suit different enclosure types:
- Cover Lens Bezel (CLB): These models feature a glass front that extends beyond the display area, allowing for a flush, tablet-style finish when mounted into a cutout. This is a perfect fit for medical devices or high-end consumer products.
- Mounting tabs: For internal mounting or rugged industrial housings, models with integrated mounting holes are available for secure screw installation.
- Slim profile: the manufacturer has maintained a very shallow depth, making these modules suitable for space-constrained applications.
Key advantages of 4D SYSTEMS HDMI TFT modules
- Zero software development: As is typical for HDMI interface modules, these are literally plug-and-play and ready to go immediately.
- Robust hardware: The modules are designed for a long service life in both commercial and industrial environments.
- Comprehensive documentation: 4D SYSTEMS provides full 2D/3D CAD models and detailed datasheets, ensuring your mechanical integration is precise and predictable.
As for what makes these HDMI displays "smart," Martin Brestovič explains that it comes down to the integrated bridge chip on the back. "Basically, this chip handles all the heavy lifting as it decodes the HDMI signal and scales it to the native resolution of the panel while managing the backlight as well. Because of this, your OS (Windows, Linux, macOS) just sees a secondary monitor with a specific resolution. It's the ideal route when you need a high-end UI quickly, without spending weeks writing drivers for a graphics processor."
Three steps to connect your 4D SYSTEMS HDMI display
Connecting 4DHDMI modules involves three main interfaces: video, touch panel data, and power.
- Video (HDMI):
Connect a standard HDMI cable from your graphics card or computer output to the HDMI Type-A port on the display module. The computer will immediately recognise it as a secondary monitor.
- Touch data and power (USB):
Check if the display uses USB-C or Micro-USB and connect a USB cable from the display to a port on your computer. This single cable sends touch coordinates to the computer via the HID protocol and, for smaller models, provides the necessary power.
- External power (large or super-bright models only):
For larger displays, typically 10,1″ and up, or the "Super Bright" 1000-nit versions, a USB port might not provide enough current. In these cases, simply plug a 12 V DC power supply into the jack on the back of the module.

Good to know: Every 4DHDMI series module comes bundled with one USB cable and one HDMI cable, with types and specs matched to your chosen model. These cables allow for immediate connection of both power and video, so you can get the device up and running right out of the box. |
The most commonly used 4D SYSTEMS HDMI displays are in stock and ready for immediate shipment. Other variants can be sourced to order with short lead times and competitive terms directly from the manufacturer.
