Tento typ LCD displejov slúži na zobrazenie písmen, čísel, znamienok a jednoduchých grafických znakov. Zobrazovacie pole týchto displejov je štandardne rozdelené do riadkov, pričom každý riadok dokáže zobraziť určitý počet znakov. Na fungovanie displeja je potrebná riadiaca elektronika, ktorá spolu s displejom tvorí samotný LCD modul.
Ide o jeden z najrozšírenejších druhov LCD zobrazovačov, ktoré našli uplatnenie v rôznych druhoch výdajných automatov, v lekárskych zariadeniach, stacionárnych telefónnych prístrojoch a podobne.
