Intelligent solutions in public lighting
IS – Industry Solutions, a. s., was established in 2013 as a managed division of Siemens. Since then, it has grown into a trusted partner for complex projects in industrial automation, digitalisation and energy and transport management, both in Slovakia and internationally.
"Our company has spent years investing in our own research, development, and innovation. This work resulted in systems like LightNET, which falls under our INTELLIGENT SOLUTIONS product portfolio. This system, along with its SMART modules and software, allows for incredibly precise management of public lighting down to every single light point. It’s designed to keep operations efficient, cut energy costs, and extend the life of the lights, all while making the city a more comfortable place to live. Because of its flexible design, it can easily adapt to whatever a modern city needs," explains Ing. Bc. Roman Barčík, Head of Research and Development at IS – Industry Solutions.
IS – Industry Solutions holds all required certifications and authorisations, including work on electrical equipment without voltage limits and has the technical expertise to deliver complete projects tailored to specific customer requirements. The company stands behind its work and guarantees long-term reliability and trouble-free operation.
How the LightNET system works
The real strength of the LightNET system is that it works with the infrastructure cities already have, like existing power grids and distribution cabinets. By adding purpose-built, programmable control and monitoring SMART modules at individual light points, the system turns a standard street lamp into an intelligent device. Each light can then be controlled and monitored independently.
The system’s hardware architecture is based on two key pillars:
1. A communication network with two-way communication, which is the basis for data transfer between devices.
2. An energy network with a permanent power supply, providing the basis for powering devices (CCTV systems, radars, traffic counters, or environmental sensors) 24 hours a day.
Every light point can be equipped with adaptive lighting controls, allowing the intensity to adjust automatically based on the surroundings and real-time needs. When compared to traditional systems, combining adaptive control with LED technology can bring energy savings of over 50 per cent and significantly extend the lifespan of the lights. It also helps reduce light pollution and increases safety by providing 24-hour lighting on demand.
The system also integrates advanced sensors for measuring noise levels, temperature, humidity, and pressure, as well as rainfall sensors and motion detectors monitoring mobility within a city or municipality. Environmental sensors for particulate matter, air quality monitoring and flood detection are also part of the solution.

Lighting management and fault reporting
All system elements are registered in a central database. Operators have a clear overview of the entire infrastructure via an interactive map or a mobile application. Faults can be identified quickly, assigned to a responsible person, prioritised, and tracked through to resolution – all while allowing for direct interaction with residents. This professional and prompt approach to problem-solving doesn't just keep the lights on; it directly increases safety, ensures efficient lighting operation, and makes the city's infrastructure significantly more reliable.
IS – Industry Solutions collaborating with leading research institutions
Roman Barčík also highlighted the company’s strong ties with the academic world. "We are proud of our long-standing cooperation with universities and research institutions, such as the University of Žilina and the Technical University of Košice. Together, we conduct measurements, testing, and R&D projects that provide independent verification of the quality and reliability of our products and solutions. This ongoing cooperation ensures that our solutions remain technologically advanced and highly dependable."
A key activity involves comparative testing of SMART sensors for particulate matter monitoring at the accredited laboratory of the Department of Highway and Environmental Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Žilina. These measurements verify the accuracy of dust particle detection. SMART sensors that meet strict EU-standard compliance criteria are subsequently used as reference devices for quality control of newly manufactured sensors. This rigorous process ensures customers receive a high standard of solution delivery and total reliability in the developed products.

Showcasing Slovakia at the Smart City Expo 2025
The innovative nature of the LightNET system eventually propelled IS – Industry Solutions to the world stage in Barcelona. "The LightNET success story took us all the way to the Slovak national stand at the Smart City Expo," noted Barčík. "It was a proud moment for us to be showcased alongside other successful Slovak companies in the Smart City sector."
The Smart City Expo World Congress 2025 in Barcelona is one of the world’s most prestigious fairs for urban innovation. IS – Industry Solutions used the platform to showcase LightNET and their other SMART technologies, capturing significant interest of both experts and international partners.
Visions for the future of intelligent lighting
IS – Industry Solutions continues to expand its research and development activities for intelligent cities and industrial applications. Strategic projects include the EMiS energy management system, which combines battery storage, photovoltaic panels, inverters and SMART components into a single, integrated solution. Designed for both public lighting and industrial use, EMiS promotes energy and economic efficiency while supporting sustainable energy sources.
"A major part of our innovation roadmap is a modular, multi-level intelligent IoT sensor network. It will allow for the monitoring of environmental data, track sensor performance, and support new SMART applications. Meanwhile, our SmartData research project focuses on integrating ICT systems to explore how these solutions can be used to better understand and manage transport processes," explained Roman Barčík as he outlined the company's vision.
Strong partnerships as the foundation of innovation
"Behind every successful technological solution is a team of researchers, developers, and integrators - but also high-quality suppliers," says Barčík when reflecting on their partnership with SOS electronic. "For IS – Industry Solutions, SOS electronic is a key partner that has long ensured the reliable delivery of the electronic components needed to develop and manufacture all LightNET devices".
The strength of this partnership lies not only in the wide range of components available, but also in the technical expertise of the SOS electronic specialists and their constructive, human approach. For years, SOS electronic and IS – Industry Solutions have been setting new standards for SMART technologies in towns and municipalities.
