Arthur Wehnelt found out that the cathode in discharge tube, made of potassium oxide or coated by potassium oxide, emits negative ions. On the basis of this feature it leads the current in one direction only and can be used as a rectifier tube. Originally, the current was directed mechanically, by commutators.
