Nick Holonyak invented fluorescent or light-emitting diodes LED. It is a semiconductor element with a single PN junction. In a diode polarized in the forward direction, electrons from the N-type semiconductor and holes from the P-type semiconductor pass to the interface where they recombine, i.e. they create neutral atoms. In this process, it emits energy in the form of visible or ultraviolet radiation.
