You most likely already know something about Belgian company Sonitron and its top class products from our articles and from our offer in this segment.
Probably majority of designers associate piezo components with various buzzers, sirens and similar acoustic “indicators”, but not that much with a reproduction of speech or music.
It´s quite logical as piezo elements tend to have a significant maximum on a resonant frequency. Thanks to that, they act as very efficient electro-acoustic components suitable right for a sound signalization.
Less known is the fact, that a significant maximum in a narrow frequency band and also the highest efficiency is usually reached also thanks to mounting of piezo element in nodes (nodal mounting) as can be seen on page 32 of the document about Sonitron piezo components. However, if we want to transfer speech or music, it´s obviously ideal to have a wide frequency response and without significant peaks.
For this purpose, it´s best to mount (at production) the piezo element on edges (p.33 in above mentioned document). In that case the whole element oscillates in a phase and a resonant frequency is perceptibly lower and also less significant. Of course, piezo element mounting is only one of several factors affecting the final result. Materials, production process and overall know-how are of a key importance. From this point of view, almost 40-year experience of company Sonitron are reflected in features of their piezo components and piezo loudspeakers (SPS, SCS).
Especially SPS series has truly exceptionally balanced frequency characteristics and perhaps the biggest advantage of these loudspeakers is that they are extremely slim, as their height including mounting is only 1-2mm (depending on a type).
